History of science museum
Villa Bartholoni The History of Science Museum is the only one of its kind in Switzerland. It is also an excellent display case for the city’s scientific past, which was particularly outstanding in the 18th century. Shaded by the trees of the Perle du Lac Park, this museum is situated in the Villa Bartholoni (the city’s most beautiful neo-classic house, built in 1828). Inside the villa, the rooms are decorated with wall paintings which are among the most accomplished of the Pompeiian style in the country. The collections are composed of numerous old scientific instruments (microscopes, barometers, sun dials, astrolabes, etc.), books and documents bequeathed by the families of Geneva’s scientists and scholars (e.g. the de Saussure collection) or donated by the public bodies for which they worked (e.g. the collection of M.-A. Pictet). |
