Of all the cities in the world, of all the homelands that a man seeks to earn, Geneva seems to me to be one of the most likely to bring happiness. Jorge Louis Borges

Ferdinand Hodler
1853 - 1918

Among his fine works, "Geneva’s Harbor at Sunrise" (1918)

Originally from Bern, Hodler was a complex painter, positioned at the crossroads of several tendencies: romanticism, symbolism and expressionism.

He produced numerous landscapes of the mountains and the lake ("Lake of Geneva Seen from Chexbres", 1895) and was also preoccupied by social problems and human labor ("The Watchmaking Workshop", 1879).

In addition, he created huge mural paintings such as "The Retreat of the Swiss After the Battle of Marignan" (1896-1900) and "William Tell" (1897 1903).

And Geneva?

Ferdinand Hodler’s studio was located at Grand-Rue 33. He worked there from 1881 to 1902.

Having been awarded honorary citizenship by Geneva, he died here in 1918.

To see:

• Many of his works are exhibited at Geneva’s Art and History Museum, rue Charles-Galland 2
• Rue Ferdinand-Hodler
